    Party Of One

January has arrived and it's always used as a new beginning or a chance for change. Veganuary, Dry January, and joining the gym are the big three in terms of changing your life, but why?

I became veggie again in June last year because it finally clicked why I shouldn't be eating meat, and I've even stopped enjoying poached eggs and never liked milk anyway. Now, I'm trying my hardest to stop drinking all together because I honestly hate the fact I turn to it when I'm feeling anxious.

The meat industry is really gluttonous, cheeseburger adverts are made to show beef in an almost sexual light, not to mention the various deals such as "GO BIG FOR 50P EXTRA", "DOUBLE UP FOR ONLY £1", it's hard to say no when you feel like you're saving money, and that whole attitude of eating more just became incredibly off putting. Drinking isn't any different, and as I've gotten older my reaction to it has made the con list a lot longer than the pro. Hangovers, stupid decisions, and most of all, it makes my mental health something else.

My hangovers aren't terrible, but every single time I drink I lose about 2 hours and that is terrifying. The next day I could almost have a heart attack trying to piece together my night, it actually reduces me to the point of tears, and makes me not want to see a single person who could remind me of the awful stuff I did the night before.

Suffering from anxiety most of my adult life, I've always turned to drinking when I've felt a bit nervous and considering that is all the time lately, I've decided that I'd rather just not. If I feel nervous in a situation I should try and work on why I'm nervous, not just stick a G&T into the equation then wake up the next day feeling worse. I've stopped doing drugs as the comedown does the same thing, so why not do the same with booze?

Eventually I'll probably have a glass of red every now and again, but the sesh is dead and it's not okay to drink a whole bottle by yourself on a Tuesday night.

    Men I Trust

Christmas is just around the corner meaning I've my post-party head in toilets more than headphones, so forgive my lack of playlist last week. To say sorry, here's as many new bands as I can think of.

    Lower Slaughter

I really enjoy music that makes me want to punch someone or full on start a fight in the pit and to  be honest Lower Slaughter whilst i'm sure are a wholesome bunch, 'Bone Meal' is definitely my battle song,

    Men I Trust

With two albums already under their belt, 'Tailwhip' is a great return since releasing Headroom 2/3 years ago. Incredibly smooth and calm, these Canadians are a treat for the ears.

    Peter Sonic

Describing himself as"6"3. Makes Coffee. Makes Tunes. Loves chilli on everything." Peter Sonic has a goth new wave sound from down under and this is his debut track 'The Cracks'.

    Danny Barwick

Hard to believe this guy is a bedroom producer as his EP Distance sounds massive. 'Flickering' is my favourite from the debut release and should be yours too.

    Lilla Vargen

Lilla Vargen is a singer-songwriter from Northern Ireland, and with just a handful of songs, 'Downtown' is an incredibly powerful yet soft song backed with her incredibly hypnotising voice.

    Young & Sick

Happy Monday, and I'm starting to think I should make this into Monday Hymn due to my tardiness, but let's press on shall we.

    Vallis Alps

Okay not exactly the newest on the block but wow Vallis Alp's new track 'So Settled' is filled to the brim with good vibes. Still no album from this two piece, but Parissa and David blend that pop like no other.

    SLATERS

I know absolutely nothing about SLATERS other than they're a production duo who enlisted the help of the silky smooth voice of TOULOUSE for their debut single released via Terrible Records.

    Young & Sick

A Fleetwood Mac cover isn't exactly new music, but Young & Sick has done one heck of a job. Nick Van Hofwegan is a Dutch artist who's illustrations are insanely good to the point he's done a few album covers you might recognise.

The Flying Stars of Brooklyn, NY

What a mouthful of a name, but wow I am excited by this latest project from Aaron Frazer. Like most people my age I was brought up by the soothing sounds of motown and it's shocking this lad has tapped into such a nostalgic sound.

    Black Gold Buffalo
It's getting absolutely freezing to the point I didn't write my Sunday Hymn as I couldn't actually face taking my hands from under the covers.

The BBC Sound of Poll came out today and it's exceptional to see some ladies leading the way for great new music. Billie Eilish who I've been shouting about all year, the impeccable Nilufer Yanya, and not forgetting the dark pop bangers from Pale Waves. Hopefully some of these will make it into the list next year.

Short and sweet this time, but maybe next week more tracks have caught my ear!

    Thunder Jackson

Brand new onto the scene with their single 'Guilty Party', and by new I mean they literally released this track five days ago and have barely 60 likes on Facebook. This Welsh/US duo who met in a taxi in California might have released one of 2017's pop banger contenders.

    Charles Watson

Slow Club are making quite a name for themselves even apart. First came Self Esteem, and now Charles Watson is going solo. 'No Fanfare' is a cute little lo-fi number that oddly suits the changing weather.

    Black Gold Buffalo

Flawlessly dressed and clean sounding, East London's Black Gold Buffalo return. They released a 'A Million' before disappearing but now they're back with a broody slice of 80's pop. Think Savages but with synths.

    MADDEE
Having a bit of a rep for talking about bands that sound made up, I thought I'd put this to use and create a weekly line up of acts that I've discovered within the last week. Presenting Sunday hymn, for those who also like to get their fix on buzz bands as if it's their religion.

    bülow

Who doesn't love a pop singer? Joining in on that Dua Lipa hype, bülow is just 17 years old and has the makings for world domination. The German/Canadian singer released Damaged Vol.1 earlier this month, including banger 'Not a Love Song'.

    MADDEE

Within seconds of listening to MADDEE's voice it's hard to believe she's only 18. Hailing from Toronto, where the indie-pop scene is booming more than ever, her jazz and R&B influenced sounds are mixed with an electronic punch that leaves an unforgettable impact.

    Strange Names

A trio of synth-pop darlings, Strange Names have released their first single 'Into Me' since their album Use Your Time Wisely came out last year. This is a love song you wish you'd written.

    Coma Pony

Taken from the Sad Boys with Happy Faces EP released earlier in the year, this super fun electronic song comes from a Mexican two piece who have supported the likes of Cloud Nothings and even performed at SXSW. Coma Pony is love.

    School of X

Continuing down this path of electronic artists, I present the Nordic School of X. Releasing the long awaited EP Faded. Dream. a few months ago, 'Forever' is on the darker side of synth making Rasmus Littauer a rock star of the Danish scene. Oh and did I mention he's the drummer for Major Lazer and MØ.

This is something I've often talked about, whether in person or online, but dating yourself is one of the most important things someone can do.

Almost 9 months ago I ended the relationship I thought I was going to be in forever. I day dreamt about our wedding, we talked about where we would raise our kids, yet life got in the way and it turned out we weren't right for each other. Now getting to a year later, I can honestly say I've never been happier because I've taken the time to get to know myself again and I'm in love. Not in a self-involved way, I just know what I want and the few men I have seen since being single, I've been able to tell if they're worth my time or not.

I spend weekends on my own, weeknights tucked up in bed, and some evenings I'll even take myself out for a glass of wine. My point is that there's nothing embarrassing about doing activities on your own, and at 27 years old it's only right that I've left all that pointless insecurity behind, about my figure, being single, and even not having great make up skills.

I'm smitten with myself, my friends, my job, and just because there isn't a handsome bearded man I've fallen for, it doesn't mean I'm not happy.
